Baseball Beer Cozy

Supplies:
- G hook
- White worsted weight yarn (I used regular Red Heart 100% acrylic)
- Red worsted weight yarn (I used a silkier red)
- Needlepoint needle
- 2 pins
Abbreviations:
- Ch — chain
- Sc — single crochet
- Dec — decrease (pull up a loop in the next 2sc, yarn over (YO) and draw all 3 loops on the hook through)
Crochet Instructions:
With white yarn:
Ch 2; 6 sc into 2nd chain from the hook
Ch 1; 2 sc into each ch; join with first sc (12 sc)
Ch 1; 2sc into same stitch, sc in next. Repeat (2sc, sc) all the way around; join with first sc (18 sc)
Ch 1; sc into same stitch, sc in next, 2sc into next. Repeat (sc, sc, 2 sc) all the way around; join with first sc (24 sc)
Ch 2; sc into same stitch, sc in next, sc in next, 2 sc into next. Repeat (sc, sc, sc, 2 sc) all the way around; join with first sc (30 sc)
This forms the base of the cozy. Turn the work so that the right size faces you (the right side will be visible when you finish the cozy). I chose to join at the end of each row. You could also place a stitch marker at the beginning of each row and continue crocheting without joining.
Row 1: Ch 1; inserting hook into back half only of stitch, sc into this stitch and each stitch around; join with first sc. (This is called a ridge stitch, and you'll start to see the "ridge" fairly quickly).
Repeat Row 1 two more times.
Now is a good time to check if the cozy is looking like it will be the right size. Grab a beer bottle, and put the cozy on. Depending on your gauge you might have to add or subtract stitches as you go, but the yarn tends to stretch pretty well.
For the next two rows, repeat Row 1, but dec once at the end of both rows. In other words, you are losing two stitches total.
Repeat Row 1 for approximately 13 more rows. (No more decreases.)
Measure against the beer bottle every 5 rows to see how it looks. You want the cozy to reach just before the bottle narrows into its neck.
Finish off; weave in ends.
Embroidery Instructions:
Thread about a yard of red yarn onto a needlepoint needle. (If too awkward, use half as much and just thread twice.)
Anywhere on the cozy, come up at the very top row.

Without pulling it tightly, go down at the bottom of the cozy before the round rows begin, as if you were stitching one big line. Pull the yarn through. (This step is like the first step of making a lazy daisy in embroidery; you are making a curve, so you are not pulling it tight).

If you measure from either of the points where the yarn came through, it should be about 3/4 inch to the center of the curve.

Pin the yarn in place, by placing a pin in the middle of the curve, and a pin at the bottom of the curve.

The stitching will look like "Vs", two stitches in the shape of lines, each at a 45 degree angle (approximately). Towards the top of the red yarn curve, come up with the needlepoint needle to the left of the yarn and go down on the right side, about 3/8 inch.

Do the same on the opposite side, coming up on the right side of the curve, and going down 3/8 inch away on the left side.

Continue to do this all the way to the bottom, making sure the curve stays in place, and removing the pins when close.

Repeat for the second curve, except that it's a mirror image, and you should at first come up with the yarn at the bottom and work your way to the top.
The center of the second curve will be about 1.5 inches away from the center of the first curve. Pin it after measuring and proceed in the same way.

Weave in all ends and congratulate yourself for making a baseball beer cozy!
