CRAFT Pattern Podcast: Speed Knitting - Scenester Scarf-Hat
It's time to get cozy with this week's CRAFT Pattern Podcast featuring the Scenester Scarf-Hat from the new book, Speed Knitting by Kris Percival and published by Chronicle Books. This scarf is a three in one special. It's a hoodie hat, a scarf, and hand warmer mitts -- all in one! This is the perfect quick gift you can make this weekend for a friend to brave the cold chill that's waiting outside.

By Brian Sawyer
At this time of the year, when many of us are scrambling and sweating over our commitments to get every member of our extended family (and, perhaps, their dogs) a handmade gift in time for the holidays, there's a definite need for the collection of projects Kris Percival provides in Speed Knitting. Of course, the purpose and timing for the book are no coincidence. Though there's a whole chapter devoted to "Gifts to Give and Get," the entire book is written with quick gifts in mind. If you're in a time crunch, there should be something in here for just about anyone on your list.
To prepare for this brief review, I whipped up the "Scenester Scarf-Hat" from the book, provided as a download in today's installment of the CRAFT Pattern Podcast. Before you start knitting it yourself, you might want to check out my build notes for some general advice and some specific things to look out for along the way.
Speed Knitting offers 24 projects that you're almost guaranteed to get done quickly. There's not really any secret sauce to what makes a project "quick and easy," and Percival doesn't claim any magical formula for the projects in the book.
In brief, here are the cornerstones to speed knitting:
- Heavy, bulky yarn Really, the thickest "superbulky" stuff you can find or, in some cases, the ideal yarn is bulkier than you can easily find.
- Giant needles I'm talking size 15 or 17.
- Small or abbreviated projects Full-sized stuff on the small side (such as a baby hat, booties, toddler dress, mittens, or dog sweater) or stuff that cuts corners in one way or another (such as a shrug, vest, "skinny" scarf, halter, shawl, or "capelet").
With quick projects like these, knitters of just about any skill level should should get what they need to satisfy their emergency holiday gift-making regimen. Beginning knitters will find simple projects and enough gentle, hand-holding supplementary material to get them a few finished products under their belts quickly. But even more experienced knitters will appreciate patterns that they can crank out on a deadline.

CRAFT Pattern Podcast: Bobble Hat by Fable Handmade Goods
Today's CRAFT Pattern Podcast is the Bobble Hat from Fable Handmade Goods. The crafty brains behind the amazing crochet patterns is Jennifer Fletcher. We wanted to introduce CRAFT readers to Jen's cool business so in addition to our regular CRAFT Podcast Pattern, we also have a short interview with Jennifer to find out more about the inspiration behind the Bobble hat and why she loves crafting.
Click here to get the PDF (and other CRAFT content) delivered automatically via iTunes - Link.
Nat: What's your background in crafting?
Jennifer: I've been crafting since I can remember. Like a lot of women in the '70's, my mom dabbled in crochet, embroidery and sewing so I was surrounded by handmade things all the time. Sewing was my first love and I would make dolls, doll clothes and even clothes for myself -- very odd things that I would actually wear! I got into jewelry-making (beading) in junior high and learned to crochet in college. Being creative is a such an integral part of my existence and I don't feel like myself if I can't make something!
Why did you start Fable Handmade Goods?
Jennifer: I started Fable in the fall of 2005. For a long time I wanted to do my own thing, and not punch the clock for the rest of my life. I've always been very independent and crafty, and starting my own business seemed like a logical decision. I had been having a lot of fun with crochet, and because it was hard to find patterns that I liked, I decided to design my own.
Nat: Tell me about the Bobble hat - What was your inspiration for creating it? What kinds of outfits would you wear it with?
Jennifer: The very first Bobble Hat I made was for myself a few years ago. I wanted a hat that looked like an acorn cap so I incorporated a lot of bobbles and a little "stem" at the top. I even crocheted a little acorn and oak leaf to use as decoration, as opposed to a flower. I really like the design, so I made a few revisions, and came up with the Bobble Hat pattern I offer on my site today.
The great thing about the Bobble Hat is that it's a basic shape, without being ordinary. With a pretty ribbon or flower, it's very romantic and can be worn with a complimentary capelet, wrap cardigan or vintage-style dress. I like to wear my Bobble Hat with jeans! The pattern is quick to make up so you could have more than one to go with various outfits.
Nat: What other pattern do you recommend to compliment the Bobble hat?
Jennifer: Probably my Sweet Magnolia Scarflette pattern ($5.25). I designed it while I was living in the South. Magnolias remind me of old oaks trees with Spanish moss, mint juleps, sweltering afternoons and Southern Belles - very romantic!

CRAFT Podcast Pattern: Boobie Scarf by Jillian Moreno
Jillian Moreno, co-author of Big Girl Knits and editor of KnittySpin Magazine has whipped up an important scarf for this week's CRAFT pattern podcast. Jillian's "Boobie Scarf" was featured along with 4 other patterns for Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Knitty.com back in the Fall of 2004. Jillian says, "Sometimes I need to be very literal. Life and death is a good reason to be blunt. Love your breasts, protect your breasts, check your breasts. If wearing a string of boobies around your neck doesn't remind you to do a self check, what will? It's also a great ice breaker, 'What's that on your scarf?' 'Why they're breasts. Have you done your self-check this month, or gotten your mammogram?'"
Help spread the word for Breast Cancer Awareness and keep yourself warm and cozy in the process with the "Boobie Scarf".
